NABCI Coordinator Judith Scarl recently announced the hiring of Jessica Barnes as the new National Bird Conservation Social Science Coordinator.

“I am excited to welcome Dr. Jessica Barnes, our new National Bird Conservation Social Science Coordinator and NABCI Human Dimensions Subcommittee Co-Chair!,” Scarl said in a statement.  “Jessica is filling the role that Ashley Gramza held until a few months ago, and like Ashley, she is employed by Virginia Tech and will be supervised by Dr. Ashley Dayer.”

Scarl continued, “Jessica is a true interdisciplinary scientist, and I am confident that she will bring great value to NABCI not just through our Human Dimensions subcommittee, but also in our efforts to support the bird conservation community build new partnerships and increase our relevancy. Jessica has experience communicating with diverse audiences and bringing together broadly varied stakeholder groups to address common challenges from multiple perspectives. For example, for her Ph.D., she worked on American chestnut reintroduction, collaborating with biologists, geneticists and economists, working on issues such as how changes in species’ distributions may impact new stakeholders and ecosystems, and how public groups can shape conservation projects through citizen science, community dialogues, and interdisciplinary research- all issues that have direct relevance for bird conservation.”
