NABCI State of the Birds reports use the latest bird monitoring and scientific data to assess the status and health of all U.S. bird species and promote birds as indicators of overall environmental health and human well-being. Under a directive from the Secretary of Interior in 2007, NABCI has produced a U.S. State of the Birds Report in 2008, 2010 (Climate Change), 2011 (Public Lands), 2013 (Private Lands), and 2014. To commemorate the Centennial of the Migratory Bird Treaty in 2016, the U.S. Subcommittee teamed up with NABCI partners in Mexico and Canada to produce the first State of North America’s Birds Report, which focuses on full life-cycle bird conservation, migratory connections, and international cooperation to ensure the health of the continent’s birds.
In 2017, the U.S. NABCI Committee decided to link future State of the Birds reports to specific policy initiatives that influence bird conservation. In August 2017, NABCI released a State of the Birds Special Report focused on Farm Bill conservation programs, meant to serve as a key communication tool aimed at Congress and the public that demonstrates how the Farm Bill can positively influence bird populations, especially on private and working lands.
The State of the Birds Subcommittee formed to oversee the production of these Reports and to ensure that NABCI partners are informed and engaged in production, dissemination, and implementation of recommendations. The Subcommittee consists of a Science Team, a Communications Team, and in 2016, a Steering Committee. Team members represent the NABCI Committee and other partners, and membership on these teams may change from year to year according to the topic of each report.
